Italy 2 – 0 Moldova40′ Giacomo Raspadori
50′ Andrea Cambiaso

🏆👉 The time for redemption has come. Italy defeated Moldova for the World Cup Qualification on Monday, June 9, 2025, at the Mapei Stadium in Sassuolo, Italy. The Luciano Spalletti era concludes with a win, but it wasn’t without its challenges. Even with the victory, the gap remains smaller than that achieved by Norway and Estonia, and the team’s performance was far from convincing. Italy faced numerous challenges from Moldova. To put it bluntly, it was excessive considering the caliber of the opponents. Moldova even took an early lead with a goal from Nicolaescu, which was ruled out for offside.
The Azzurri attempted to mount an attack, but their approach was too sluggish, making it difficult to penetrate Moldova’s low defensive block. A moment of brilliance from Giacomo Raspadori was necessary, as he scored with a fantastic long-range shot to put Italy in the lead. At the start of the second half, Andrea Cambiaso added a second goal, aided by a misjudged play from Avram. Following the second goal, the Azzurri gradually lost momentum, failing to generate significant threats, while Moldova grew in confidence and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
The FIGC Federation will have the entire summer to find the right successor for Spalletti, someone who can guide the national team to the 2026 World Cup. The qualifiers will resume in September with back-to-back matches against Estonia and Israel.
Italy takes the lead in the 40th minute. A combination play between Dimarco and Ranieri led to a cross from the Fiorentina defender, which was blocked. The ball found its way to Giacomo Raspadori, who struck it on the fly with his right foot, scoring a stunning goal.

Italy scores its second goal in the 50th minute. Riccardo Orsolini makes a run on the right, but Davide Frattesi mishandles the ball, allowing it to reach Andrea Cambiaso, who then beats Avram. The Azzurri now have a two-goal advantage.

The historical data favors Italy in their encounters with Moldova: they have faced each other five times, with four of those being World Cup qualifiers and one a friendly, all victories for the Azzurri. The total score stands at 15-2; the only teams against which Italy has a perfect record, having played more matches, are Malta (10/10) and Estonia (7/7).
This is a significant challenge for Luciano Spalletti, who will be coaching the Italian national team for the final time after his dismissal following the trip to Oslo. The coach aims to bid farewell to the Azzurri with a victory, reigniting hopes for direct qualification and wrapping up his coaching tenure on a high note.
