The Coppa Italia Semifinal First Leg showcased the Milan Derby.  AC Milan and Inter ended with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the iconic San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. Tammy Abraham opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Hakan Çalhanoglu equalized in the 67th minute with a long-range shot. Maignan made crucial saves against Zalewski and Mkhitaryan, while Leao posed a threat for the Rossoneri.

The return match of the Coppa Italia semi-final featuring Inter and Milan is scheduled for April 23.

To give you some background, Milan and Inter have clashed in eight previous knockout rounds of the Coppa Italia before reaching the final, with both teams advancing four times. The last time they met in this context, the Nerazzurri emerged victorious in the 2021/22 semi-finals.

AC Milan gained the upper hand in the 47th minute when forward Tammy Abraham found the net with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Youssouf Fofana provided the assist after a collision with Frattesi, allowing Abraham to outmaneuver Martinez in the box with a precise angled shot.

The last time they achieved a longer streak of consecutive wins without conceding in this competition was in 2010, when they recorded three 1-0 victories in a row during the semi-finals and final under José Mourinho.

Milan has both scored and conceded in their last four Coppa Italia matches, netting a total of 14 goals during this stretch—one more than they managed in their previous ten games combined.

Player Stats

Tijjani Reijnders has contributed to two goals in the three matches against Inter this season (with an assist in the first leg and a goal in the return). The Dutch midfielder has scored nine goals at home in the 2024/25 season, and the last Milan midfielder to hit double digits in home goals in a single season was Kaká in 2008/09 (10).

Lautaro Martínez has netted nine goals against Milan across all competitions, with only Giuseppe Meazza (12) and Stefano Nyers (11) having a better record against the Rossoneri in Inter’s history. Additionally, he has scored eight goals in the Coppa Italia, a record that no Nerazzurri player has surpassed in the last 20 seasons, matching Julio Cruz’s tally.

It was a disappointing defeat for Empoli, who had previously eliminated Juventus in a penalty shootout to reach their first semi-final. However, the stark difference in league performance was evident.  The relegation-threatened hosts were outperformed by Bologna, who are in pursuit of a Champions League spot.

Bologna opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Jens Odgaard delivered a cross from the left. While Thijs Dallinga drew the attention of two defenders, the ball found the unmarked Riccardo Orsolini, who struck a first-time shot into the net, beating goalkeeper Jacopo Seghetti.

The visitors extended their lead just six minutes later, with Dallinga finishing a perfectly timed through ball from Dan Ndoye. Six minutes after the break, the duo connected once more, as Dallinga slid in to convert Ndoye’s pass across the goal.

Empoli won the Coppa Italia Quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the Allianz Stadium in Empoli, Italy. What an incredible night at the Allianz Stadium!  Empoli has made history by reaching the Coppa Italia semi-finals for the very first time!

This achievement is well-deserved for Roberto D’Aversa’s team, who took the lead in the first half. Although Thuram worked his magic to equalize, Juventus pushed hard for the lead but couldn’t break through Empoli’s solid defense. They even faced the threat of conceding again during counterattacks from the visitors. The match went to penalties, where Vlahovic and Yildiz missed their shots, but every Empoli player found the net. The winning penalty was scored by Marianucci, sealing a memorable evening for Empoli!

This marks Empoli’s third appearance in the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia, having previously defeated Catanzaro, Torino, and Fiorentina to get here. Meanwhile, Juventus is living a nightmare after recent Champions League exit and now losing the Coppa Italia.

Empoli struck first in the 24th minute when Youssef Maleh found the back of the net with a powerful right-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner, thanks to an assist from Jacopo Bacci. It was a stunning moment for the Tuscans as Maleh unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box, leaving goalkeeper Mattia Perin with no chance as the ball sailed into the corner!

Juventus leveled the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute when Khéphren Thuram found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner. Randal Kolo Muani provided the assist. It was an impressive goal from the French midfielder, who executed a brilliant maneuver to outsmart Henderson near the edge of the area and then beat Vasquez at the near post!

The only time Juventus and Empoli faced each other in the Coppa Italia dates back to 2007/08, when in the round of 16 the Bianconeri won with an overall score of 6-5 (2-1 for the Tuscans in the first leg and 5-3 in favor of the Old Lady in the return leg).

Juventus have lost only one of their 17 home games against Empoli in all competitions (14W, 2D): 1-0 in Serie A, on 28 August 2021 (decisive goal by Leonardo Mancuso).

Empoli were eliminated the last time they participated in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, losing 4-0 on aggregate to Inter in the 2006/07 edition (2-0 for the Nerazzurri in both the first and second legs). The Tuscan team could become the 41st different team to reach the penultimate act of the competition.
