Gianluca Lapadula’s Peru wins the Copa America semifinal after beating Paraguay 4-3 on penalties on Friday 2 July 2021 at the Stadio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico Teixeira di Goiânia. Benevento striker Lapadula scoring a brace in the first half of the 3-3 matured in the regular 90 minutes. There were also two expulsions  one for each team. The game decided on penalty shoot out and the smiling faces are for Peru fans, and, of course Lapadula’s fans in Italy. Peru will play the Copa America Semifinal against the winner of Brazil vs Chile. Peru is among the top 4 teams in South America.

Peru and Paraguay won two of their four matches in the Copa America Group Stage qualifying to the Quarterfinals. Peru finished second place in Group B, just three points behind Brazil after defeating Colombia 2-1 and Venezuela 1-0, while drawing 2-2 with Ecuador and dropped their result against Brazil 4-0. Paraguay finished third in Group A just one point behind Uruguay, claiming a 3-1 win against Bolivia and a 2-0 win against Chile, while losing 1-0 to both Argentina and Uruguay.

  • *Benevento forward Gianluca Lapadula scored 21′ and 40′ plus converting a penalty in the shootout .  Selected as “Man of the Match.” Played all game.
