Group Stage – Group D

The United States triumphed 1-0 against Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19, 2025, during the CONCACAF Gold Cup Group Stage at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. This win secures a place for the U.S. men’s national team in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup.  The U.S. will finish group play on Sunday, June 22, facing Haiti at AT&T Stadium.

Chris Richards netted the goal with a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top left corner, with an assist from Sebastian Berhalter. Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper, Nawaf Al-Aqidi, was unable to prevent the goal.

In the context of the match, the victory, along with the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D’s other game on Thursday in Houston, secured a knockout stage spot for the Americans.

Regarding tactics, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino maintained the same lineup that achieved a 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. This marks the first instance of him not making changes in consecutive matches since he took charge of the team last October. However, against No. 58 Saudi Arabia, the 16th-ranked Americans displayed less attacking prowess than they did against the No. 100 Soca Warriors.

The Gold Cup serves as the final competitive challenge for the USA team before the 2026 World Cup. As co-hosts with Mexico and Canada, the U.S. automatically qualifies for the World Cup.

Stats before the game

This match marks the first encounter between Mexico and Suriname in the history of the Gold Cup. If Mexico wins against Suriname on Wednesday and Costa Rica defeats the Dominican Republic, they will secure a spot in the Gold Cup quarterfinals.

Mexico recently achieved a 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic to kick off their group play. Although they are seen as favorites to win the tournament, they currently sit in second place in Group A, trailing Costa Rica due to a lower goal differential. Suriname, on the other hand, suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat in their group opener against Costa Rica and will be looking to recover in their second match.

The Costa Rica National Football Team will face off against the Dominican Republic National Football Team during the Group Stage of the Gold Cup on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.

Costa Rica is riding a strong wave of success, having achieved victories over Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bahamas. They will be looking to maintain this winning streak with a win against the Dominican Republic.

On the other hand, the Dominican Republic’s recent performances have not been up to par, as they come into this match following a defeat to Mexico in the Gold Cup Group Stage last Saturday. Their defense has been vulnerable, allowing goals in each of their last four away games.
