The wait is nearly over. Beppe Iachini’s Fiorentina finally return to action on Monday night as Brescia visit the Stadio Artemio Franchi. And though the Viola faithful won’t be there to see the team, there’s still plenty to look forward to from the clash.
Take a look at these five things you need to know about Fiorentina v Brescia…
1. Fiorentina and Brescia have faced off in Florence on 22 occasions. Eighteen of those matches have taken place in Serie A, with the Viola winning 14, drawing two and losing two, with 43 goals for and 15 goals against along the way. There has also been one Serie B meeting (a 2-1 win for Fiorentina) and one Divisione Nazionale clash (a 3-2 win for Brescia). Making up the remaining two games are two Coppa Italia matches, with Fiorentina winning one and drawing the other (seven goals for, one against). So, overall, Fiorentina have a record of 16 wins, three draws and three defeats against Brescia at home, with 54 goals for versus 20 goals against.
2. Fiorentina v Brescia has often served up some high-scoring games. There was the 7-1 win on 5 February 1967, featuring a Kurt Hamrin hat-trick, a double from Mario Brugnera and goals from Giovan Battista Pirovano and Giuseppe Cosma. Or the 4-0 victory on 2 April 1995, when four different players got on the score sheet: Fabrizio Di Mauro, Gabriel Omar Batistuta, Rui Costa and Francesco Flachi. Three years later Fiorentina mauled Brescia 5-1 courtesy of a Batistuta brace and goals from Stefan Schwarz, Luis Oliveira and Edmundo. And most recently, on 30 November 2000, the Viola went one better in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals with a 6-0 win over the Rondinelle: this time the goals came from Enrico Chiesa (2) and Leandro Amaral, Mauro Bressan and Rui Costa.
3. Perhaps one of the most unfortunate Fiorentina v Brescia games – from a Brescia perspective – was the Viola’s 4-3 win on 8 February 1987, when the visitors contrived to score an unbelievable three own goals (two from Giuliano Giorgi, a Carrara native who came up through the Fiorentina youth ranks, and the other from Tullio Gritti). The other Fiorentina goal came from Nicola Berti via a splendid assist from Giancarlo Antognoni.
4. As well as having provided plenty of goals over the years, Fiorentina v Brescia has often been a decisive match for the fate of both teams. On 10 April 1993, the Week 27 meeting between the two sides ended in a 2-2 draw after the Viola threw away a two-goal lead earned through goals from Brian Laudrup and Batistuta, who was sent off for a second bookable offence seven minutes before Brescia equalised. The Viola were relegated at the end of the season, which Brescia managed to qualify for the relegation play-off… only to lose to Udinese. Another 2-2 draw between Fiorentina and Brescia, this one on 24 February 2001, proved costly – this time for Viola coach Fatih Terim, who was fired after the result (Nuno Gomes and Rui Costa got the goals for Fiorentina, while Roberto Baggio scored a brace for the Rondinelle). Finally, on 29 May 2005, a 3-0 win for Dino Zoff’s Fiorentina side over Brescia on the last day of the season saw Fiorentina secure their Serie A status – and condemned Brescia to the drop.
5. The last Fiorentina v Brescia match-up took place over nine years ago, on 9 January 2011. True to form, it was an exciting game. Brescia raced into a two-goal lead (Alessandro Diamanti and Nicolas Cordova) before the break, resulting in a nervous wait for the second half to begin. Had the result remained the same come full time, Sinisa Mihajlovic’s Viola team would have dropped into the relegation zone. But Fiorentina were a different team after the restart: Alberto Gilardini grabbed one back on 72 minutes, Mario Santana equalised in the 86th minute and finally Adem Ljajic – on for Marco Donadel just before the hour mark – scored the winner two minutes later. The result proved to be a galvanising one for Fiorentina, who ended the season in a respectable ninth place.
