🏆 👉   AC Milan ended the UEFA Champions League Group Stage game against Newcastle United with a goalless draw on Tuesday 19 September 2023 at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy.  There were numerous scoring opportunities for the Rossoneri, especially in the first half. Opportunities for Chukwueze, Olivier Giroud, Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao, Pobega and Reijnders. Newcastle United dangerous only in full recovery with Longstaff. Bad news for AC Milan are the muscle injuries for Maignan and Loftus-Cheek.

In the next round of the Champions League for Milan, away match at Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle will play at home against PSG.

Stats before the game:  This is the first official meeting between Milan and Newcastle: the Rossoneri have won only one of the last 11 matches against English teams (2D, 8L), but the success came against Tottenham in last season’s Champions League (1-0 at the Meazza ). Newcastle enjoyed success in their last European away game against Italian opposition, beating Palermo 1-0 in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup. Prior to that, the Magpies had failed to win any of their first four away games in Italy (D2, L2). This will be Milan’s 20th participation in the Champions League, only Juventus (23) has more among Italian teams. After seven seasons of absence between 2014-15 and 2020-21, this is the Rossoneri’s third consecutive edition in the competition. Semi-finalists last season, Milan have only been eliminated in the group stage in one of their last 14 Champions League appearances (in 2021-22). This will be Newcastle’s third season in the Champions League, after 1997-98 and 2002-03. Their last game in the tournament was 20 years and 184 days ago, the longest such gap for an English team in the competition.

Inter humiliated AC Milan by winning the Milan Derby with an outstanding score of 5-1. This is a solid victory for Inter claiming the full bragging rights to rule in the City of Milan. The Nerazzurri spread in the second half and won the derby with a resounding 5-1, climbing to the top of the table as sole leaders. Henrikh Mkhitaryan on top (two goals and an assist), joys also for Marcus Thuram, Davide Frattesi and the former Çalhanoğlu (on a penalty, a foul by Theo Hernandez on Lautaro). Rafael Leão is not enough for the Rossoneri, who have never been incisive.

Genoa with a brave front managed to difficult Napoli’s game taking the lead with a 2-0.   Napoli with a late reaction grabbed a draw to end the game with a 2-2.  One point each, but is more a “golden point” for Genoa, who are newly promoted from Serie B, facing Italy’s Champions.

Juventus defeated Lazio at the Allianz Stadium with a 3-1. The protagonist of the match was Dušan Vlahović, author of a brace. Federico Chiesa also scored. The honor goal for Lazio was scored by Luis Alberto. Surely, this victory is the needed boost for Juventus to reach 10 points.

Fiorentina overturned the result and defeated  Atalanta.  Fiorentina won their second victory at the start of the season. The game was a thriller, with 5 goals, and many emotions. Fiorentina after a slow start in the first half, closed the first 45 minutes at 2-1 thanks to Giacomo Bonaventura and Lucas Martínez Quarta. In the second half, Atalanta recovered with Ademola Lookman’s first goal of the season but the changes were fundamental. Christian Kouamé, who came on in the 63rd minute, scored the decisive goal to make it 3-2, as well as blocking Atalanta’s last action on the development of a corner kick.

AS Roma made a super goleada, a total demolition destroying Empoli with an astonishing result of 7-0.  The victory helped Roma climb from the 19th to the 12th position obtaining their first victory of the season.  Empoli remained with 0 points in the last position with the worst defense conceding 12 goals.  Double from Dybala, Renato Sanches, Cristante, Mancini and also the first joy from Lukaku, as well as an own goal from Grassi. Empoli not reaching the goal and still without goals in the championship, only Baldanzi tries and hits a post in the second half.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan on top (two goals and an assist), joys also for Marcus Thuram, Davide Frattesi and the former Çalhanoğlu (on a penalty, a foul by Theo Hernandez on Lautaro). Rafael Leão is not enough for the Rossoneri, who have never been incisive.

Inter and Milan have not faced each other on equal points in Serie A since 11 May 2001 (6-0 for the Rossoneri) and only once in the history of Serie A have they clashed with the same points and at the top of the table: on 4 February 1962 (2-0 for the Nerazzurri), in that case Fiorentina were also in first place.

On the fifth day, Inzaghi’s boys will visit Empoli while Pioli’s team will host Verona.

What a quick start! Inter opened the score in the 5th minute. The goal by Henrikh Mkhitaryan following the action by Thuram with power on Thiaw, low and tense cross, Dimarco’s left foot deflected under range by Mkhitaryan.
