Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
AC Milan, 5th position with 11 points and a positive goal difference of +7
Fiorentina, 13th position with 7 points and a positive goal difference of “0”

The curtain has come down at the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence! Fiorentina is celebrating their victory in Serie A Week 7 on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at their home ground. Meanwhile, AC Milan faced a disappointing setback, unable to secure even a draw. It was quite the thriller! For the first time since January 23, 2022, a Serie A match saw two penalties saved by different goalkeepers. Fiorentina was involved, with Radunovic saving Biraghi’s shot and Terracciano blocking João Pedro’s attempt in the Cagliari-Fiorentina game, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Viola celebrated a well-fought victory, claiming all 3 points, while Milan is still yearning for a miracle. The first half was action-packed, featuring remarkable saves from both Miagnan and De Gea on penalty attempts. Zinedine Adli finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, scoring after receiving a perfect pass from Gosens.

The second half proves to be even more thrilling than the first 45 minutes of the match. In the 56th minute, the ever-reliable David De Gea brings the Franchi crowd to life: Kean is fouled by Gabbia, and Abraham steps up to take the penalty. However, once again, the Spanish goalkeeper showcases his skills by diving and deflecting the shot into a corner. The excitement continues in the 60th minute when Theo Hernandez delivers a pinpoint cross that Pulisic skillfully converts, finding the back of the net past De Gea.

Fiorentina responds in the 73rd minute when Albert Gudmundsson capitalizes on a setup from Kean, firing a shot towards the far post that beats Maignan, the French goalkeeper. The match concludes with a flurry of tackles and cards, highlighted by direct red cards for Palladino and Hernandez, the latter being sent off for protesting at the end. This fiercely contested game wraps up in the 96th minute, with a victorious outcome for Viola.

The beginning of the match

Fiorentina struck first in the 35th minute when Yacine Adli fired a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner, leaving goalkeeper Maignan with no chance. Robin Gosens provided the assist for this goal.

In the 45+1 minute, AC Milan had an opportunity to level the score. However, Theo Hernández’s penalty was thwarted by goalkeeper David De Gea, who made a fantastic save on his left-footed attempt aimed at the bottom right corner. The penalty was awarded after Luca Ranieri fouled Tijjani Reijnders.

In the 56th minute, Fiorentina’s goalkeeper De Gea made another fantastic save. Tammy Abraham’s penalty attempt was thwarted as De Gea stopped his right-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner. The penalty was awarded after Moise Kean fouled Matteo Gabbia.

Milan lights up the field! And guess who made it happen? Captain America himself, Christian Pulisic, brought the game back to level with a fantastic right-footed strike into the bottom left corner, assisted by Theo Hernández.

In the 73rd minute, Fiorentina regained the lead when Albert Gudmundsson found the back of the net with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner, assisted by Moise Kean.

Stats before the game

In their recent matchups, Milan has triumphed in six of the last eight league games against Fiorentina, suffering just two losses. This includes victories in both encounters from the previous season. The Rossoneri haven’t managed to string together more consecutive wins against the Viola in Serie A since a streak of seven from 2008 to 2011.

The last 13 Serie A clashes at the Franchi have been quite competitive, with both teams securing four wins each and five matches ending in a draw. The most recent encounter saw Milan edge out Fiorentina with a 2-1 victory on March 30.

Fiorentina have drawn four of their first six Serie A games of the season (W1 L1) for only the fourth time in their history, after 2000/01, 1980/81 and 1941/42; only in 1980/81, however, have the Viola recorded five draws in the first seven games of a Serie A championship.

Fiorentina have remained unbeaten in 10 (5W, 5D) of their last 11 home league games; however, the Tuscan team’s only home defeat in the period came against Milan: 1-2, on March 30.

Paulo Fonseca has won the last three matches in charge of Milan in the league; only once in Serie A has the Portuguese coach recorded four wins in a row: between July and August 2020, in charge of Roma.

Milan – the best attack in this championship (14 goals – double those of the Viola, 7) – in the previous 24 seasons only in 2002/03 have they scored more than the 14 goals (19 in that case) of the current Serie A in the first six games (14 also in 2020/21).

Milan is the only team against which Moise Kean has already scored with two different teams in the Italian top flight (on 17 December 2017 with Hellas Verona and on 6 April 2019 with Juventus). In addition, among the forwards in this Serie A only Valentin Mihaila (-1.6) has a greater negative difference than Kean (-1.4) between goals scored and Expected Goals (two goals against an xG of 3.4).

Player Stats

Christian Pulisic has netted goals in his last three Serie A games. Throughout his time in the top five European leagues, he has yet to score in four straight matches, with his previous best being three in a row during October and November 2019 while playing for Chelsea.

Rafael Leão has scored a total of four goals against Fiorentina in league play, with his first Serie A goal coming on September 29, 2019, at the Meazza. He has a higher goal count against Lecce, where he has scored five times. The Portuguese player has also been on the scoresheet in his last three league matches against the Viola. However, he has not yet accomplished scoring in four consecutive games against any one opponent in Serie A.
