Quarter-Final: England vs France
Saturday 10 December, 7pm

England opened the score in the 38th minute. Jordan Henderson defeated Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy with a left footed shot to the center. The assist is by Jude Bellingham.

Despite Senegal having many chances to score, it is England to increase the score for the 2-0 before ending the first half. In the 45+3′ Captain Harry Kane scored with a right footed shot to the center. The assist is by Phil Foden.

Chaos for Senegal falling down! It’s England again, Bukayo Saka scored with a left footed shot to the center. The assist is by Phil Foden.

Stats before the game. This will be the first match between England and Senegal. It will be the 13th time that England’s first match against a new international has come at the World Cup; the Three Lions have lost only one of the previous 12 such instances (W7 D4), a 0-1 defeat against the USA in 1950.  Senegal have alternated between winning (3) and not winning (D1, L2) in their six World Cup matches against European opponents, losing 2-0 against the Netherlands in their last match (Day 1 of this tournament).  England have never lost in seven previous World Cup matches against African teams (W4 D3); the only previous match of its kind in the knockout stage was against Cameroon in the 1990 quarter-finals, when they won 3-2 after extra time, with goals from David Platt and two penalties from Gary Lineker.  African national teams have lost eight of their nine World Cup knockout matches against European sides, the only exception being a 2-1 victory over Sweden by Senegal in the round of 16 in 2002. However, in all competitions, the England have never lost to an African in their history (14W, 6D).  England could reach the quarter-finals in consecutive World Cups for the first time since 2002/06: the Three Lions have only been eliminated in two of the tournament’s seven round of 16, against Germany in 2010 (1 -4) and on penalties against Argentina in 1998.

🏆👉 France dominated and convincingly won the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 defeating Poland on Sunday 4 December 2022 at the Al Thumama Stadium in Al Thumama, Qatar. Practically, France easily gets rid of Poland and got their pass to the Quarterfinals to face the winner of the challenge between England and Senegal. France, after finishing the first half ahead by a goal thanks to Olivier Giroud, spread on the counterattack in the second half with Kylian Mbappé, able to exploit the large spaces allowed by the Polish formation and score a sumptuous brace that ends the match prematurely. In fact, the goal from the penalty spot scored by Poland captain Robert Lewandowski just seconds from the end of the match was useless.  This is the second meeting between France and Poland at the World Cup: the previous one dates back to the third-place play-off in the 1982 tournament – a 3-2 win for Poland.

The highlight of the game is with AC Milan forward Olivier Giroud became France’s top goal scorer in Les Bleus’ history with 52 goals. Giroud at 36 years and 2 months is the oldest scorer in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup since Roger Milla, who scored twice against Colombia at the age of 38 in 1990. Well done!

✅   Stats before the game. France are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Poland in all competitions (W3 D4): the last defeat against the Polish national team dates back to a friendly in August 1982 (0-4). Les Bleus have kept clean sheets in each of their last three matches, all played since the turn of this millennium. France became the first reigning World champions to reach the knockout stages since Brazil in 2006. The last reigning champions to be eliminated in the round of 16 was Italy in 1986 (loss 2 -0 against France). This will be Poland’s first match in the knockout stages of the World Cup since 1986, when they lost 4-0 to Brazil in the round of 16. The Polish national team’s last victory after the group stage of the World Cup came against France, 3-2 in the 1982 third-place match. Since the introduction of the round of 16 at the 1986 World Cup, France have qualified for the knockout stage on five occasions and progressed through all five times (1986, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018). The only other national teams to enter this stage more than once and always qualify for the quarter-finals are Germany (8/8) and Croatia (2/2). This will be the third time Poland have faced the holders at a World Cup and they have not lost in either of the previous two: 1-0 against Brazil in 1974 and 0-0 against Germany in 1978.
