🏆 Real Madrid secured the 2024/25 European Super Cup at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday, August 14.  Atalanta etched their name in history, and even though they didn’t win the match.  Most importantly, they walked off the field with their heads held high.  Most of all, the Nerazzurri faced the formidable Real Madrid without fear, showcasing their skills on a grand stage.  The UEFA Super Cup pits the Champions League winner against the Europa League champions.

This victory marks Real Madrid’s sixth triumph in the UEFA Super Cup, with previous wins in 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2022.  As a result, making them the most successful team in the history of this competition.  Certainly, Italian supporters were delighted to witness a clash between two Italian coaches.  First, Carlo Ancelotti leading Real Madrid and second, Gian Piero Gasperini at the helm of Atalanta, both leaving the field with pride.  Ancelotti becomes the first coach in history to win the UEFA Super Cup five times. In the spirit of Italian sportsmanship, one team celebrates victory while the other faces defeat. However, the bond of friendship endures.

The progression of the match unfolded in an interesting way.

Atalanta’s impressive first half was insufficient to thwart Real Madrid’s advance.  As a matter of fact, the Nerazzurri nearly took the lead in the 25th minute, however, de Roon’s cross was inadvertently headed onto the crossbar by Militao.  Moments later, Éderson attempted a shot from the edge of the area. Yet, his effort went wide of Courtois’ left post. Finally, after half an hour, Lookman had a promising chance, but Real’s defense held firm.

In the latter part of the match, Ancelotti’s team took charge, netting two goals in just ten minutes. First, in the 59th minute, Vinicius made a clever move in the left zone and set up Valverde with a perfect pass, allowing him to easily score. Then, secondly, only nine minutes later, Real Madrid increased their advantage with a right-footed strike from Kylian Mbappé, who found the net just under the crossbar. This marked Mbappé’s first goal for Real Madrid.  In conclusion, this was a fantastic way to win over his new supporters.

The UEFA Super Cup result is just a party moment for Italian football.

Congratulations to Carlo Ancelotti and Gian Piero Gasperini! Atalanta has now become the 41st team to compete in a UEFA Super Cup final, marking a significant milestone for the club. This is truly their first appearance in this prestigious tournament.

Federico Valverde goal in the 59th minute.

Kylian Mbappé goal in the 68th minute.

✅   Stats before the game: The next edition of the UEFA Super Cup will be the 49th – in the previous 48 editions, the title has been won by 25 different teams from 12 different nations. For example, the last six editions of the competition have seen six different teams lift the trophy.  Spain (16) and Italy (nine) are two of the three nations with the most UEFA Super Cup triumphs – England are second (10).  Furthermore, this will be the third meeting ever between Real Madrid and Atalanta in all competitions, after the two-legged tie in the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League round of 16, with the Blancos winning on both occasions (1-0 in Bergamo on 24 February 2021 and 3-1 in Madrid on 16 March).

This is the fourth UEFA Super Cup final played between an Italian and a Spanish team.  Consequently, the balance is of two Italian triumphs (both by Milan, against Barcelona in 1989 and against Sevilla in 2007) and one Iberian (by Atletico Madrid against Inter in 2010).  The next one will be the ninth participation of Real Madrid in a UEFA Super Cup final, which will thus tie Barcelona in first place among the teams that have participated most often in the competition.
