Atalanta kicks off their Champions League journey Matchday 1 – League Phase with a draw on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Italy.  This goalless draw marks their first tie of the season and earning them a point in the standings. They are now looking forward to their upcoming match against Shakhtar on Wednesday, October 2. Meanwhile, Arsenal continues their unbeaten run, securing their second draw of the season. In the next round of the Champions League, they will take on PSG at the Emirates Stadium in London.

This was the first encounter between Atalanta and Arsenal. The Gunners will be the fifth English club to challenge Atalanta in a major European tournament, following Everton (2 wins), Manchester City (1 draw, 1 loss), Liverpool (2 wins, 2 losses), and Manchester United (1 draw, 1 loss).

Arsenal has struggled in their last three Champions League away matches in Italy, with their last visit dating back to 2013. Those losses occurred against Roma (0-1 in 2009), Milan (0-4 in 2012), and Napoli (0-2 in 2013). The pressure is on Atalanta to secure a win.  Forza Atalanta!!!!!  ⚫️🔵

Oh no! What a stroke of bad luck! Atalanta had the opportunity to go ahead in the 51st minute when referee Clément Turpin pointed to the spot for a penalty. Sadly, Mateo Retegui’s attempt was thwarted by goalkeeper David Raya, who saved his right-footed shot directed at the bottom left corner. The penalty was awarded after Thomas Partey committed a foul on Éderson in the area. Believe it or not, it was saved twice! But let’s keep fighting!

Stats before the game

In Atalanta’s last four matches in the Champions League during the 2021/22 group stage, both they and their opponents managed to score at least two goals in each game (with two draws and two losses). Remarkably, throughout the history of the European Cup, no team has ever achieved the feat of scoring or conceding at least two goals in five consecutive matches. Arsenal, on the other hand, has kicked off their last six European competitions with a victory in their opening match, including five in the Europa League and one in last season’s Champions League.

The last team to defeat the Gunners in their debut was Dinamo Zagreb during the 2015/16 Champions League. Gian Piero Gasperini celebrated his 50th match in charge of Atalanta in a major European competition (excluding qualifiers) with a 3-0 win in the 2023/24 Europa League final. The Nerazzurri’s coach has a winning record of nearly half, with 24 victories out of 50 matches (14 draws and 12 losses). In the last Champions League season, only Atlético Madrid (+6.16) exceeded their expected goals (xG) total by a larger margin than Arsenal (+5.49), who scored 19 goals despite an xG of 13.51. Additionally, Arsenal boasted the third-best conversion rate in the 2023/24 tournament at 15.7%, trailing only Manchester United (16.9%) and Atlético Madrid (16.8%).

UEFA Champions League Tickets

Atalanta has played 23 matches in the UEFA Champions League, averaging 3.6 goals per game, with a total of 40 goals scored and 43 conceded. Among teams that have played at least 20 matches in the competition, only Viktoria Plzen has a higher average at 3.8 goals per game. On the other hand, Bukayo Saka has been a standout player for Arsenal in the 2023/24 Champions League, being involved in eight goals across nine appearances (four goals and four assists). This sets a new record for an English player in their first season, breaking Lee Bowyer’s previous record of six goals and one assist from the 2000/01 season with Leeds United.

Furthermore, Ademola Lookman from Atalanta had an impressive run in the UEFA Europa League last season, scoring five times in his last three starts, including a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen. However, he has not scored in four matches against Arsenal, and his only Champions League appearance was in October 2019 for Leipzig against Zenit.
