✅ Stats before the game: This will be the first meeting in a major international tournament (European/World Cup) between Austria and Turkey, with the Austrian national team having won two of the last three meetings in all competitions (L1), including a 6-1 victory in March this year. Turkey has remained unbeaten in the last five official matches against Austria (W4, D1), and has always kept a clean sheet in the period; this will be the first non-friendly match between the two teams since the 0-0 draw in EURO 2012 qualifying in September 2011. Austria qualified for the knockout phase of a major international tournament (European/World Cup) for only the fourth time in its history, after the 1934 and 1954 World Cups and EURO 2020, when it lost 2-1 against Austria. ‘Italy is in the round of 16. This is only the third time that Turkey has reached the knockout stages of a European Championship, after 2000 and 2008 – in their last participation at this stage of the tournament they reached the semi-finals, although they have not yet won any such challenge in its history (1N, 2P). Only Germany (8.8) conceded fewer passes on average than Austria (9.0) before making a defensive intervention in the EURO 2020 group stage, as highlighted by the PPDA (Passes allowed Per Defensive Action) index. Furthermore, the Austrian national team is second in tackles made (61 – only less than Georgia’s 63) and first in fouls committed (49) in the tournament.
