AS Roma falling!! Empoli won the Serie A Week 2 beating Roma on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. Empoli celebrates their first victory over Roma, securing a two-goal advantage thanks to Gyasi and Colombo’s penalty kicks. The home team responded fiercely, striking the posts twice before Shomurodov managed to score with a header. Dybala came close again, hitting the woodwork in injury time, but the Tuscans managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.
For Roma fans, this match holds extra significance as they celebrate Paulo Dybala’s decision to turn down an offer from an Arab club and continue his journey with Roma.
Daniele De Rossi and Roberto D’Aversa are set to meet for the first time as coaches. As players, they clashed seven times in Serie A, where De Rossi led the way with four wins compared to D’Aversa’s two, along with one match ending in a draw.
Here’s how it all begins….
Empoli took the lead in the 45+7′ minute before ending the first half. Emmanuel Gyasi scored with a precise right-footed shot placing the ball high into the center of the goal. The assist came from Lorenzo Colombo.

✅ Stats before the game.
Roma have won eight of their last nine Serie A matches against Empoli, losing the most recent one, on the final day of last season, on May 26 (2-1 at the Castellani Computer Gross Arena); the Tuscans have never won two games in a row against the Giallorossi in the competition. Roma are the team against which Empoli have played the most away games without ever winning in their Serie A history: in 16 away games against the Capitoline team, the Tuscans have recorded two draws and 14 defeats.
In their last away game against Roma in the league, on September 17, 2023, Empoli recorded their biggest defeat in their Serie A history: 7-0.
Roma have won only one of their last eight games in all competitions (1-0 against Genoa on May 19 in the league – 4N, 3P); The Giallorossi ended last season scoring exactly one goal in each of their last five home games: they have not scored more than one in a home Serie A match since the 3-2 win over Torino on 26 February 2024.
In the previous 22 championships, Roma have only drawn both of their first two Serie A games of the season once: in 2019/20, against Genoa and Lazio in that case, under Paulo Fonseca (matches decided by default are excluded from the count). With the 0-0 draw against Monza, Empoli drew their first Serie A match of the season for the first time in their 17 participations in the tournament (4W, 12L). The Tuscans could remain unbeaten in both of their first two Serie A games of the season for only the third time in their history – the previous two in 2006/07 and 1986/87.
