Montella: "Deserved defeat. We need to work hard"

Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella spoke to the press after his side’s disappointing 1-3 loss to Cagliari at the Stadio Artemio Franchi this evening. Montella first spoke to Sky Sport Italia: “Fortunately things are going better in Europe. Thursday’s match wore us out mentally. The side put the effort in but we deserved to lose tonight. The race for the European places is now getting a lot tighter and we’ll fight to the end to qualify. “We deserved the boos and whistles tonight because we didn’t have a great game and there was no continuity to our play. We’ll try to turn those boos into applause next time out. We were lacking the tempo that has characterised our play recently,” declared Montella. The Viola coach then had the following to say in his post-match press conference: “We didn’t play well and lacked organisation. I take responsibility for what’s happened but we need to stay united. We need to roll up our sleeves and get back to the way we’ve been playing. We can’t do anything about the boos but get our heads down and work even harder. This is our second home defeat in a row to teams worse than us on paper. “Did we put in too many bad crosses? Look, we need to work hard to improve. We don’t need to have a training camp as we have one every three days already. We’ve never had two home defeats in a row before so this is obviously not a great spell for us. We want to turn this around. “When you play every three days you use up a lot of energy, and not everybody is able to reset their batteries and start again. Perhaps we’re not capable of doing that constantly. Maybe we need one coach for the league and one for the cups!” said Montella.
