France won the UEFA EURO 2024 Quarterfinals defeating Portugal on Friday 5 July 2024 at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany. France beat Portugal 5-3 in a penalty shootout to reach the European Championship semifinals ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s chance to win the title in his last appearance at the tournament. Iconic Cristiano Ronaldo and 41-years old Pepe salute the Euros.

The game ended with a goalless draw, then, we went to extra time and still 0-0. The game had to be decided with penalty shootouts where Joao Felix hit a post with a penalty in the shootout and AC Milan player Theo Hernández converted the winner penalty. The battle between key figures Kylian Mbappe captaining the French and Cristiano Ronaldo bringing record-breaking to Portugal came to an end.

France reaches the semi-final for the fourth time in the last five editions of the European Championships and World Cups: at EURO 2016, at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. All four national teams that eliminated Les Bleus in the quarterfinals in these tournaments then went on to won the trophy (Italy in the 1938 World Cup, Greece at EURO 2004, Spain at EURO 2012 and Germany in the 2014 World Cup).

Portugal and France also met in the group phase at Euro 2020, drawing 2-2 in Budapest in a match in which three of the four goals came from the penalty spot.

Stats before the game: This will be the fifth meeting between Portugal and France at the European Championships; the Portuguese have remained unbeaten in their last two matches (1-0 success in the 2016 final and 2-2 draw in the 2020 group stage).
