Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Genoa, 14th position with 8 points and a negative goal difference of -1
AC Milan, 2nd position with 18 points and a positive goal difference of +7

Mission accomplished with an agonizing ending.  AC Milan won the Serie A Week 8 game on Saturday 7 October 2023 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy.   Milan are now the sole leaders with 21 points taking over the 1st position.  After Inter’s draw today against Bologna, a victory would put the Rissoneri alone at the top with 21 points. Genoa remained 8 points behind.

A match where little happened for almost 90 minutes and where Milan kept the ball but never found any openings or shots on goal. Christian Pulisic’s goal unlocks the match and makes the final incandescent. Red to Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan for a foul outside the area, Olivier Giroud on goal, and Genoa’s free kick which chipped the crossbar. Immediately afterward Genoa goalkeeper Josef Martinez was also sent off, but Piccinini decided that this was enough.

After the break a Milan-Juventus that will not see either Theo Hernandez or Maignan on the pitch. Genoa will instead visit Atalanta.

Genoa proved to be a complicated opponent to face at home. Despite the blackout on the first day against Fiorentina, 1-4 at the end, they then stopped Napoli, 2-2, and defeated Roma 4-1. The last match at Ferraris ended 3-0 for the Rossoneri.

AC Milan opened the score in the 87th minute. It is “Captain American” Christian Pulisic to defeat Genoa goalkeeper with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Yunus Musah.

What a crazy ending. AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maigan got a red card in the 93rd minute. Chaos for Milan because all changes were made. The response to this unusual situation is taken by French forward Olivier Giroud becoming now a goalkeeper to protect the victory.

No, this is just crazy. In the 90+13′ minute, Genoa goalkeeper Josef Martinez also got a red card!!!!!

Here is the “Magic Moment!” Olivier Giroud making a super save to avoid Genoa’s equalizer goal!!!

Stats before the game: Milan have won in seven of the last nine Serie A matches against Genoa (1D, 1L), including all the last three in order of time – in the period they have scored at least two goals seven times. In the last five matches at the Ferraris between Genoa and Milan in Serie A, four Rossoneri successes and one draw. Grifone’s last victory at home against Diavolo in Serie A dates back to 3-0 with Juric on the bench on 25 October 2016 (goals by Ninkovic, own goals by Kucka and Pavoletti).
In all the last nine occasions in which Genoa have collected at least eight points in the first seven Serie A matches (last in 2018/19) they have always survived at the end of the season; the last relegation with this score at this point in the tournament dates back to 1994/95. The 18 points gained in 2023/24 are Milan’s third best start after seven games in a Serie A season in the three points for a win era: behind only the 19 points in both 2021/22 and 2003/04. Milan’s last five defeats in the league have all come away from home, from February onwards; the Rossoneri’s last defeat away from Milan (therefore excluding the derby) came against a Ligurian team, a 0-2 defeat against Spezia on 13 May 2023.

👉 Lineup GENOA (4-4-1-1): Martínez; De Winter, Drăgușin, Bani, Vásquez; Sabelli, Thorsby, Frendrup, Haps; Malinovskyi; Guðmundsson.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game
Inter, 1st position with 18 points and a positive goal difference of  +16
Bologna, 8th position with 10 points and a positive goal difference of +2

Inter and Bologna ended the Serie A Week 8 with a draw on Saturday 7 October 2023 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy. Inter squandered a double advantage by being overtaken by a courageous Bologna. Francesco Acerbi and Lautaro Martinez scored, Riccardo Orsolini responded with a penalty and, in the second half, the final equalizer goal scored by Joshua Zirkzee. Surely, a great game for Thiago Motta’s team, who also found points at San Siro against Inter and practically without the starting defense. On the other hand, a missed opportunity for Inzaghi’s team to extend their lead, with Milan now having the chance to take first place.

Inter opened the score in the 11th minute. Francesco Acerbi defeated Bologna goalkeeper with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Hakan Çalhanoglu following a corner conceded by Riccardo Calafiori.

Image

Inter with another goal. In the 13th minute, it is Lautaro Martínez  to score with a right footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is  by Marcus Thuram. Lautaro remaining sole top scorer now with 10 goals.

Image

Bologna shortened the distance in the 19th minute.  Riccardo Orsolini defeated Inter goalkeeper by converting a penalty with a left footed shot to the bottom right corner. The penalty is conceded by Lautaro Martínez  after a foul on Lewis Ferguson.

Image

A headache for Inter. Bologna equalized in the 52nd minute. Joshua Zirkzee scored with a right footed shot  to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Lewis Ferguson .

Stats before the game: The last draw in Serie A between Bologna and Inter dates back to 19 September 2017: 1-1 scored by Simone Verdi for the rossoblù and Mauro Icardi for the nerazzurri – since then four victories in Emilia and seven in Lombardy. Since Simone Inzaghi has coached Inter, the Nerazzurri have collected two victories at home against the Rossoblù and two defeats away. Inter have recorded three consecutive home victories against Bologna in Serie A and in both of the last two in order of time they have even triumphed with a score of 6-1 – the Nerazzurri team have not achieved four home successes in a row in the league against the Emilians from the period 2001-2004. This is the fifth time in the three points per win era that Inter have started a Serie A championship with at least six wins in the first seven games played (after 2019/20, 2017/18, 2002/03 and 1997/98 ), but in none of the previous four did it win the Scudetto (three times second and once fourth). Bologna have collected four consecutive clean sheets in Serie A for the first time since March 2016 and have not reached five since November 1999 (in that case the fifth match was against Inter, but at home) – for the Emilians they are well 428 minutes without conceding a goal, currently the longest open streak in the top five European leagues 23/24.
