Fans turn out for Food Day on 12/01/2015

The AS Roma Food Day run last weekend by Roma Cares turned out to be a huge success.

The event, organised before the home match against Atalanta, was the first of its kind in Italy. Around 600kg of foodstuffs were collected outside the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday 29 November.

The capital’s food banks were the beneficiaries of donations, the bulk of which included peeled tomatoes and sweetcorn.

As part of a series of shared projects with the Holy See in the year of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the club called on supporters to get collecting. The fans responded positively, keen to contribute to the cause.

With political tension high following the Paris attacks, Food Day’s success was a strong message against fear. Supporters came together in a showing of solidarity against extremism and social exclusion.

The sweetcorn and peeled tomatoes collected during the initiative will be distributed over the coming days by the Sant’Egidio Community, the Baobab Centre and the Lazio Food Bank to the Santa Lucia, Regina Mundi and Appio-Tuscolana food banks.

Food Day was run in partnership with non-profit Equoevento. AS Roma invited around 40 people from the Sant’Egidio Community to watch the match on Sunday, allowing lots of children to enjoy a special day out with their families.

On behalf of everyone at AS Roma, we thank all those who contributed to making Food Day such a big success.
