Napoli ended the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 First Leg game against Barcelona with a draw on Wednesday 21 February 2024 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. Barcelona took the lead with a goal by Robert Lewandowski. Napoli reacted with the equalizer goal by Victor Osimhen.
Everything will be decided on the return leg, on Catalan soil. Surely, a fundamental challenge for two teams who, through the Champions League, want to turn the season around.
Napoli have never won a match against Barcelona in the main European competition (2D, 2L); the last meeting between the two teams dates back to the round of 16 of the 2019/20 Champions League when the Blaugrana won with an aggregate score of 4-2.
A cold shower at the Maradona. In the 60th minute, Barcelona opened the score with Robert Lewandowski defeating Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Pedri.
Napoli reacted and equalized the game in the 75th minute. Forward Victor Osimhen defeated Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Frank Anguissa.

✅ Stats before the game: Napoli have never won a match against Barcelona in the main European competition (2D, 2L); the last meeting between the two teams dates back to the round of 16 of the 2019/20 Champions League when the Blaugrana won with an aggregate score of 4-2. Barcelona won 4-2 in their last match against Napoli, in the 2021/22 Europa League playoffs. No team has scored more away goals against the Neapolitan team in a single match in European competitions (4-2 victory also for Manchester City, in November 2017). Barcelona have remained without success in their last three matches against Italian teams in the Champions League (D1, L2), recording as many defeats as they had in their previous 19 matches against this type of opponent in the competition (W11, D6, L2). Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri remained unbeaten in the five home matches played in the Champions League (W4, D1), winning the last three. This will be only the manager’s third match in the knockout phase of the competition, after the two matches in the round of 16 of the 2011/12 edition (defeated against Chelsea with an aggregate score of 5-4).

🏆👉 Mission accomplished! Inter won the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, First Leg game defeating Atletico Madrid on Tuesday 20 February 2024 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy. This is Inter’s first knockout match in the Champions League against a Spanish team since the 2009-10 semi-final, when, with José Mourinho at the helm, the Nerazzurri eliminated Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona (3-2 aggregate score).
⚫🔵 Inter arrives at the match against Atletico Madrid, strong in first place in the Serie A and in 2024 in which they have won all the matches played (eight) in all competitions, including the decisive one to win the Italian Super Cup. Simone Inzaghi’s team had finished their Champions League group in second place, behind Real Sociedad, due to a worse goal difference than the Spaniards.
Inter opened the score in the 79th minute. It is Marko Arnautović to score thanks to a mistake between Reinildo and De Paul which opens the way for Lautaro, who kicks at Oblak. The ball ends up in Arnautovic’s area, who repeats it on goal, despite Lino’s saving attempt. GOOALLL

✅ Stats before the game: The only precedent between Inter and Atlético Madrid dates back to the 2010 European Super Cup, won 2-0 by the Spaniards thanks to goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Agüero. With Diego Simeone at the helm, Atlético Madrid have won five of their six knockout matches in European competitions against Italian opposition. However, the most recent of these ended with a 0-3 defeat at Juventus in the round of 16 of the 2018-19 Champions League – a result which eliminated them from that tournament (after the 2-0 gone). Atlético Madrid have won only five of their 18 away games against Italian teams in European competitions (D4, L9), however the Colchoneros have won both matches against these opponents at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (1-0 in 2014 and 2-1 in 2021 , again against Milan). Inter have lost just one of their last 13 Champions League matches (W7, D5): in last season’s final against Manchester City. The Nerazzurri kept a clean sheet in 62% of their matches in the period (8/13), conceding just nine goals.
👉 Lineup INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro.
👉 Lineup ATLETICO MADRID (3-5-2): Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Hermoso; Molina, Koke, Saul, De Paul, Lino; Llorente, Griezmann.
