Italy Head Coach Gian Piero Ventura has called up 22 players for the international friendly game Italy vs San Marino on Wednesday 31 May 2017 at the Carlo Castellani Stadium in Empoli, Italy.   Players will meet on Sunday 28th May at the Technical Center of Coverciano after ending the 2016 – 2017 Serie A Season.

  • As reported by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), from the 29th to 31st May, the Vetro Museum will display both the World Cups and the European Championship won by the National team, whilst the fountain in the Piazza Farinata degli Uberti will be lit up in the colour blue to pay homage to Ventura’s squad. Just a few hours before Italy’s game against San Marino, a fair-play friendly will also be played between the fans of both nations. Meanwhile, in terms of action inside the ground, a number of young players from Tuscan sports clubs will take part in small-sized matches out on the pitch. Finally, the ‘Vetrina Azzurra’ initiative is also set to take place across the city, with local companies being encouraged to creatively decorate the front of their business with an Italian theme. Tickets for the friendly against San Marino are up for grabs.

Located inside the old Magazzino del Sale, the Vetro Museum in Empoli will be displaying the four World Cups and the European Championship trophy that have been won the Italian National team. Here are the opening hours for the public (free entry)

2. Illumination of the fountain in the Piazza Farinata degli Uberti
Date: From 29th to 31st May

In coincidence with the game against San Marino, the Fontana dei Leoni in the center of the cities’ main square will be lit up with the colour blue to pay homage to the Italian National Team.

3. Vetrina Azzurra
Up until May 29th 

The ‘Vetrina Azzurra’ initiative is set to take place across the city, with local companies being encouraged to creatively decorate the front of their businesses with the colours of the Italian National Team. Tickets for the friendly against San Marino are up for grabs.

4. Fan Match Italy – San Marino
Date: 31st May – 17.30 
Location: Cortenuova training pitch

A special match will take place a few hours before Italy vs. San Marino. On the training pitch of Empoli Ladies, two sets of supporters from Italy and San Marino will take part in a fair-play friendly match.

5. Youth and School Sector activities pre-match
Date: 31st May– 19.40 ca.
Location: Stadio Castellani

In support of women’s football, a number of young players from Tuscan sports clubs will take part in small-sized matches out on the pitch at the Stadio Castellani.

Italy will be playing for the second time in Nice. The Allianz Riviera will see two of the most successful teams in world football meet. Italy can boast of four World Cups, one European Championship while Uruguay have won two World Cups, 15 Copa Americas and two Olympic gold medals.

  • Precedent: Italy’s previous fixture in Nice was on 20th August 2008 against Austria at the old Stade du Ray with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. There have been ten meetings with Uruguay with the South Americans ahead in the head-to-head record with four wins, two defeats and four draws. The most recent meeting was on 24th June 2014 in Natal at the World Cup when Italy were eliminated. This will be the fifth meeting on neutral ground after previous encounters in the Netherlands, Mexico and Brazil. Italy have only played the Celeste once in Uruguay which was in Montevideo in January 1981 at the Mundialito.
  • In the qualifier, it will be the eighth Italy match in Udine where the Azzurri are unbeaten with five wins and two draws. The latest result there was a 1-1 friendly draw with Spain on 24th March. The only previous match against Liechtenstein took place in Vaduz two months ago with Italy winning 4-0.
