Belgium making their debut in the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a victory against Algeria after being down by a goal.    It’s a super victory for Belgium because the winner goal scored by Italian Serie A player Napoli forward Dries Mertens who came as a substitute. Belgium are in Group H along  Russia and South Korea.

Napoli having 1 player in each team: Forward Dries Mertens for Belgium and defender Faouzi Ghoulam with Algeria.

Belgium:  1 Italian Serie A player with Belgium National Football team:

  • Napoli forward Dries Mertens played 45 minutes replacing forward in the 46th minute and scoring the winner goal in the 80th minute.

Algeria:  4 Italy Serie A players with Algeria National Football team:

  • Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam, played all 90 minutes
  • Livorno defender Djamel Mesbah, not playing, listed as a substitute (Livorno relegated to Serie B next season)
  • Inter Milan midfielder Saphir Taider, played all 90 minutes
  • Udinese midfielder Hassan Yebda, not playing, listed as a substitute

It is Algeria to open the score in the 24th minute after Referee Marco Rodriguez granted a penalty to Algeria.  Penalty conceded by Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen after a foul on Algeria midfielder Sofiane Feghouli.  It is Feghouli to convert the penalty with a right footed shot defeating Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the center.

Forward Dries Mertens replacing forward Nacer Chadli in the 45th minute.

Belgium equalizing in the 70th minute with midfielder Marouane Fellaini defeating Algeria goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi with a headed shot in the top right corner.

In the 80th minute, there you go, Belgium taking the lead following a fast break with the winner goal by forward Dries Mertens defeating Algeria goalkeeper M’Bolhi in the top right corner.  Surely, Napoli fans must be cheering  for the goal too.

SERIE A SPORTING AUTHORITIES: LIST OF SUSPENSIONS AFTER Serie A Week 37

Here is the list of suspensions by the Sporting Authorities Judge Gianpaolo Tose after the latest round of Serie A Week 37:

4 game suspension

Paponi (Bologna) 

3 game suspension

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus) has been handed a 3 game ban after the use of video replays showed he elbowed Roma’s Miralem Pjanic.

Other suspension / fines

A section of the Atalanta stadium has also been handed a 1 match closure.

AS Roma meanwhile have been fined 50.000 euros after discriminatory chants by their fans during Sunday’s match.

Round and the 2013 – 2014 Serie A will end on Sunday May 18!   Juventus winning
the 2013-2014 last week!

AS Roma – 0 – 1 Juventus.   The 2013-2014 Scudetto Champions Juventus reaffirming their dominion in Serie A by defeating AS Roma their main rival at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium.  Making it a painful defeat for the Roman gladiators is that the only goal was scored by the ex forward Pablo Osvaldo in the 94th minute!   Juventus reaching 99 points and will look to celebrate the “100” mark next week in their home stadium.

Hellas Verona 2 – 2 Udinese.  A draw with a failure sense for Hellas Verona failing to win this home game at the Friuli Stadium.  Verona were in the lead and ready to battle for the Europa League, yet, a cold shower in the 91st minute.  Udinese equalizing the game to crash Verona hope….

Sad news for 3 teams, mathematically speaking, Bologna, Catania, and Livorno are relegated to Serie B.  A sweet and sour victory for Catania defeating Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium, but not enough to save themselves.  Bologna 1 – 2 Catania.
