🇮🇹👉   The Italian National team started their first training on Monday 18 March 2024 ahead of the two friendly games against Venezuela and Ecuador. The training on the field of the ‘Giulio Onesti’ Olympic Preparation Center of Acqua Acetosa dedicated to Gianluca Vialli and the words of the coach Luciano Spalletti brought forward the departure for the USA.

Monday 18 March 2024 – Italy Team Schedule

  • 16.00 TRAINING open to the Media complete session at ROME CPO “Onesti” / Campo “G. Vialli”
  • 17:45 PRESS CONFERENCE: Italy Head Coach Luciano Spalletti, CPO “Giulio Onesti”

During the press conference, Italy Head Coach Luciano Spalletti commented, “We are going to receive the affection of our compatriots to whom we owe so many things. They are over there working and they have opened up new frontiers and new knowledge for us. They will be two matches that will allow us to organize something from the tactical. Will we find Chiellini and Cannavaro in America? We will remove some pieces and if possible we will insert them into some of our players, as is done with a graft in the countryside…”.

As for Francesco Acerbi  leaving the team, Spalletti commented,   “My thoughts are contained in the statement .  I would never want to find myself in this position, but we have the responsibility for what is a very important sport and for what our nation is. From what he told me Francesco, however, is not an episode of racism, so we must be careful even when we go to report an episode of this kind. We saw Francesco in difficulty and we regret from a human point of view having made these decisions, but we must stay pay attention to our behavior.”

Other focuses on individuals, starting with a rediscovered Lorenzo Pellegrini:  Spalletti added, “We’ve waited a long time for him, I’ve never had him available. He’s a footballer whose level is easy to evaluate: he knows how to do more things. I don’t know what will come out, but he is one of those you can count on. He had problems, he put them right: with the quality that Daniele De Rossi wants in Roma he expresses himself at ease.” De Rossi, whose work Spalletti is greatly appreciating: “I have taken a lot of what he has done in this period. He seems a bit like Carletto Mazzone to me, when he expresses being part footballer and part coach. He is doing a exceptional work and it wasn’t easy in such a short time. I wish the best possible to those who made everything they had available to me.” Among the protagonists of De Rossi’s Roma, also Gianluca Mancini, called in place of Acerbi: “He plays inside, he fits in, I see him building and then I find him in the opponent’s area. The fact that I hadn’t called him is not a failure not even for him, but because I know very well what players like Mancini, Politano and El Shaarawy, to give other examples, can give.”

Spalletti declared that in the United States, there might be a possible three-man defense tests: “But I think that football is a fluid thing, not rigid. You can move from one system to another, I want to evaluate this 3-4-2-1, it will depend on the characteristics of those who play. We have the possibility, by changing something, to be more surprising. A game system that can enhance players like Chiesa (“Man jumps, he knows how to score goals, he can pass into situations in which others see insurmountable walls”) or like Frattesi (“For what, intensity and quality he is someone who knows how to attack the defensive line like few others”).

Italy has called up 28 players for the international friendly games against Venezuela and Ecuador.

  • On Thursday 21 March, Italy will play against Venezuela (22:00 CET Italian time, 5:00 PM local time – live on Rai 1) at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, home of Inter Miami.

🇮🇹👉 The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced that Inter defender Francesco Acerbi left the Italian National Team Camp. Acerbi met with Head Coach Luciano Spalletti and teammates to explain his version of what happened during last night’s game against Napoli  on Sunday 17 March 2024 (Serie A Week 29).

Acerbi who arrived at the camp in Rome this morning (Monday 18 March), explained to Coach Spalletti and his teammates his version of the alleged racist expression reported by Juan Jesus during Inter vs. Napoli last night, as required by the internal policy of Club Italia.   Consequently, Roma defender Gianluca Mancini, who was already part of a reserved squad list, has been called up.

From the Nerazzurri defender’s report, in waiting for what happened to be reconstructed in compliance with the autonomy of sporting justice, it emerged that there was no defamatory, denigrating or racist intent on his part. However, it was agreed that Acerbi should be left out of the squad for the next two friendlies scheduled in the United States to let things settle for the national team and the player will return to his club today.

  • At 16:00 CET (entry for accredited media from 15:30 CET), the national team will have their first training session at the CPO Giulio Onesti in Acqua Acetosa, where coach Luciano Spalletti will also hold a press conference at 17:45 CET.
  • Departure for the United States is set for tomorrow at 10:20 CET, with arrival in Miami scheduled for 17:05 local time.

Three players receiving their first called up include Torino defender Raoul Bellanova, Verona midfielder Michael Folorunsho, and Udinese forward Lorenzo Lucca. All three had already been called up for previous gatherings dedicated to players of national interest, with Folorunsho unable to respond to the last call-up due to an illness.

  • ✈️   IN THE USA WITH ITA AIRWAYS. The Azzurri will gather on Sunday, 17 March, in Rome, and on Monday will hold their first training session at the CPO Giulio Onesti at Acqua Acetosa. The departure for Miami is scheduled for Tuesday at 10:20 CET aboard an Airbus A330neo ITA Airways, a new-generation aircraft that is lightweight, silent, and efficient, boasting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat offered 25% lower than previous-generation aircraft.
  • The flight will last 11 hours and 45 minutes, with arrival in Miami expected at 5:05 PM local time.

THE PREVIOUS MATCHES IN THE STATES.

The first time the National Team played in the United States dates back to 1976 when the Azzurri were invited to the Bicentennial Cup organized by the US federation for the 200th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. Italy, led by Fulvio Bernardini and Enzo Bearzot, debuted with a clear victory against the hosts (4-0) but then lost the following two matches against England (from 2-0 to 2-3) and Brazil (1-4). The last encounter in the USA dates back to June 2005. On 8 June, Marcello Lippi’s Italy drew 1-1 with then Serbia Montenegro (goals by Zigic and Cristiano Lucarelli), the same result as the second friendly played on 11 June in East Rutherford, in the New York area (goals by Luca Toni and Ayovi). In these two matches, Lippi tried out several players who would later be called up for the 2006 World Cup (Barone, Barzagli, Grosso, Oddo, Iaquinta, Peruzzi, Toni, and Zaccardo), laying the foundations for the triumph in Berlin. In between, of course, is the USA ’94 World Cup, in which after a shaky start, Arrigo Sacchi’s Italy, led by Roberto Baggio (with 5 goals, the top scorer of the National Team in the States), overcame Nigeria, Spain, and Bulgaria before succumbing only on penalties in the final against Brazil. Overall, the National Team, which has played in 7 stadiums and in 7 different states, has played 16 matches in the USA, with a record of 7 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses (20 goals scored, 14 conceded).

THE OPPONENTS. It will be the first meeting in history between Italy and Venezuela. The ‘Vinotinto’ has never participated in the final stage of a World Cup, but this long drought could end as they currently occupy 4th place (9 points in 6 matches) in the South American qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup, where, due to the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams, the top 6 teams in the group will qualify. There have been 2 previous encounters with Ecuador: a victory for the Azzurri (2-0, with a brace from Vieri) in the final stage of the 2002 Japan and Korea World Cup and a draw (1-1, with a goal from Toni) in the 2005 friendly match in New York. The ‘Tricolor’ has participated in 4 World Cups (2002, 2006, 2014, and 2022), with their best result being the Round of 16 in 2006. In the qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup, after losing away to Argentina, they have put together a streak of 5 consecutive positive results (3 wins and 2 draws), but they only have 8 points in the standings due to a deduction (-3).
