Despite having last minute injuries with defener Philippe Mexes and forward Francesco Totti, the challenge for AS Roma was to get a victory to reach Inter in the first position of the Serie A Standing.

The challenge for Genoa
was to beat Roma or get a draw to keep their record of not losing at home, only once precisely in the first match of the current Season 2007 - 2008 against AC Milan (Genoa 0 - 3 Milan).

A miraculous header by none other than the Hero of the Italian National team Roma Defender and Ex Genoa player Christian Panucci gives Roma an agonizing victory in the 90th minute.  Roma is now in the 1st position along FC Inter with 25 points. Inter will play at 11:30 a.m. today.

Let's say that this match promised lots of emotion and early goals. Yet, had not been for the miraculous header of Christian Panucci giving Roma the victory, this match was a disappointment.

Forward Mirko Vucinic could not take Roma by the hand and deliver goals. While for Genoa, it was a great effort from forward Marco Borriello the one fighting like a true gladiator to get a victory but "Lady Luck" refused to help Borriello.

The positive note of the match is that Roma better start thinking on "getting an insurance for Panucci's head." It seems Panucci at his 34 years old is finding the "Youth Fountain," and being in the right place, at the right moment, and with his targeted "headers."

Just 7 minutes before Referee Rosetti whistles the end of the match, both teams showed a determined will to get a last minute goal.   In the 83rd minute, the newly entered defender Ludovic Giuly sends a pass to Max Tonetto and gets a corner kick. Adding emotion tho these agonizing moments, Mauro Esposito whistled  for a push. Then, it was Marco Di Vaio caught offside at the other end.

In the 86th minute, it is Roma to win a corner kick. Midfielder Daniele De Rossi shoots but is cleared by Leon. And just in ac act of desperation Bega commits a deliberate handball and gets a yellow card.

The great moment comes in the 88th minute when Roma just fighting with all they had, finds a team effort with David Pizarro who lobs a ball over the top trying to find Mirko Vucinic, though, Genoa defender Bega heads the ball away.

Things are not over and Mauro Esposito gets a free kick, 30 yards from goal. Just like a thrilled movie script, shoot has to be repeated because it was blocked with a hand. To reach the happy ending, there you go, the perfect scenario with the main STAR, the one and only Christian Panucci shining with all his splendor. Gets set, ready, camera...go... Panucci heads the ball to the net and it's goallllll..... Genoa 0 - 1 AS ROMA.

Bad news for Genoa, three of their players Juric, Danilo, and Faro who got a yellow card will mis the next match against Torino. For Roma, Ferrari will miss the next match against Udinese in the Olimpico.

Anna this result is great for all of us, i hope Inter lose and distance will shorten for everybody. You were right, Borriello was the man to watch from Genoa, he had more chances to score but no luck to convert. Again, Antunes did not make it, but at least he was on the bench.

Pietro I totally agree. Borriello played well, only thing missing was a goal. Sad for Antunes, this time I will urge his agent to search immediately for another club. Good for ROMA.... BIG REWARD for Panucci!
